Introduction
The Directorate of Research is headed by Deputy Director General (Research) and supported with two Assistant Director General (Research Planning), Assistant Director General (Monitoring and Evaluation) and number of scientists. The Directorate ensures that all research projects taken up by ICFRE Institutes are need based and address the regional and national forestry research problem. The research prioritization by the Directorate is through participatory mechanism involving all the stakeholders and end users. For holistic approach to address the research problems and to avoid duplication of work, ICFRE has initiated an All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRPs) on some emerging themes and including important forestry species.

Mandate
The Directorate of Research has the unique distinction of for holistic approach to address the research problems and to avoid duplication of research work ICFRE has initiated all India coordinated research projects (AICRPs) on some emerging themes and important forestry species. The divisions of the Directorate complement each other in coordinating the research program of ICFRE.
Research Planning
1- Preparation of calendar of RAGs
2- To coordinate the conduct of RAGs at Institutes
3- To conduct the RPC Meeting
4- To convey the approval for New Research Projects to Institutes
5- Follow up action for New Research Projects and to convey final approval.
Monitoring and Evaluation
1. Monitoring and evaluation of all ongoing research projects of ICFRE Institutes and suggest corrective measures for timely completion and, achieving the proposed objectives.
2. Evaluation of Project Completion Reports (PCRs) of plan projects as per ICFRE guidelines.
3. Periodical Seminar in ICFRE institutes for improving the quality of research and its extension.

15- Estimation of economic losses in real term per hectare basis due to forest fire in Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh: Scheme supported by National Authority CAMPA.
